REVIEW: CITY CAFE

City Café is housed within the Mint Hotel at Tower Bridge. Inside the décor is light and airy with full length windows running along the whole of one side. The a la carte menu features British favourites such as Fish & Chips and Shepherds Pie and the Market Menu which changes twice a week offers a good value set menu.

To start we choose the Prawn Cocktail and Spinach and Ricotta Ravioli. The prawn cocktail was the winning dish, served in a huge glass topped with a large tempura prawn, the mountain of prawns rested on a tangy mixture of diced tomatoes, avocado and onion. The ravioli was an artistic piece showing ’white space' it could have perhaps done with a couple more pieces.

For mains the Fish and Chips consisted of an impressive sized beer battered cod with a small wall of chips, a little too small for our liking. The fish so soft it fell apart was coated in a fresh golden batter and balanced on some ace homemade minted mushy peas and served with a chunky tartar sauce. From the Market Menu we choose the Sea Bream with a side of Tomato and Onion salad. The sea bream was thick, meaty and very tasty, the salad could have done with a few more onions as it was more of a garnish than an ingredient.

Rhubarb Tart served with a dollop of rhubarb sorbet was so good we could have eaten it twice!

All in all it was a pleasant meal, the food was tasty and fresh the only grumble being that some dishes were a bit skimped on.
